Round End Table | The Softening Effect

There was a time not so long ago where end tables were square and accent tables were round.

To quote Bob Dylan, “Times they are a changin’”.

In the old days, rooms were decorated so everything matched perfectly. All the furniture lines had to be the same. If the coffee table was square, then all the other surfaces in the room needed to have squared edges, too. Eventually, someone realized this could be a bit overkill and not necessarily welcoming to those who looked at it. A room with too many sharp angles seems uninviting. It needs a softening effect. This is where round end tables came into the picture. It was quickly realized that the addition of a round end table to an otherwise angular room would make things look a little warmer and cozier. In recent years, round end tables have become very popular, softening the otherwise sharp angles of rectangular furnishings such as recliners, loveseats and coffee tables.

In addition to softening the look of angled furniture, a classic round end table will also soften the sharper angular corners of the room itself.

While the shape of a wood or glass round end table is the same across the board, it is amazing how many varieties of these tables are really available.

The initial appearance can differ dramatically depending on the wood or metals used to create the round end table, the stains and finishes used to create the final color, and the detailing on the piece. The tabletop can be simple wood grain, or be accented with hand-carved detailing, resin embellishments or veneer inlays. What’s more, the table can either be a single pedestal top, a three-legged design, or the more traditional four-legged variety, each adding a different character to the table’s overall personality.

Some of the newer round end table shapes offer even more in the area of design, such as a double tier round end table that looks as if a smaller table has been placed on top of a matching larger table.

If you need a round end table that also offers you a space to store things in your home, you can consider drum tables. This table design has a front that opens to reveal a shelved storage area.

Other storage options that may come from a round end table include drop leaf tops where one edge can be folded down to create a straight line that can be placed against a wall in a tighter room space. Another round end table design is the revolving bookstand. This round end table comes in handy if you’re a rabid reader but don’t want the unsightly mess of magazines on the counter. Instead you can place them in the bookstand, and they will always be at the ready.

As you design your home’s living space, appreciate the fact that end tables have indeed changed with the times. New trends and design concepts have brought the round end table front and center in living space design, helping you create the living space of your dreams.
