An often overlooked portion of home décor is the foyer or front hallway. This space regularly looks a little bland and unloved compared to other areas of the home.
When someone walks into your home for the first time, this area is going to be their first impression. Is it warm and inviting? Is it cold and sterile, or is it just a mess?
In the old days, an entryway was lavishly appointed with furnishings, paintings or photos and beautiful lighting. It made a statement about who you were and what you status in society was.
While it is true not a lot of furniture can fit into this space today, usually a console table can be fit into the foyer, as well as one other piece of furniture such as a small side chair. What many don’t realize is that that a console table can be more than just a simple piece of furniture; it can serve a number of purposes.
First, it is an accent. Purchasing an ornately decorated console table will really spice up the entryway in your home. There are so many options in the console table arena that you can definitely find one that will suit your home, no matter what décor style you have chosen. Some come with wrought iron legs for a more antiqued or rustic look, others have black lacquer, and still others have veneer tops for a classier appearance.
Second, a console table can offer much needed storage. When you first walk into the house, you likely look for a place to toss your keys down, or put your gloves when the weather outside has turned frightful. Maybe you need a spot for the dog’s leash, flashlights and other items that you generally take in and out of the house. You can either toss them on the counter, making a messy first appearance for your guests, or install a console table with enough drawers and shelves to put these items away. That way they are still at hand when you need them, but not making a cluttered mess in your home.
Third, most foyers are a little dim. The lighting is not always as good as many would like it to be. This can make guests feel gloomy upon entering your home, which is rarely how you want guests to be while they are visiting you. Once again, enter the console table. In this case it can make a great place to set a lamp. The addition of a single lamp can cast a warm glow across the space and make your home much more welcoming to those who are coming to visit. If you have a theme for the décor in your home, you can find a lamp that matches it.
Finally, consider adding a small area rug to the entryway. This is particularly true if you have hardwood or tile floors, but you can also add an area rug over your carpeting to help protect it from whet or muddy feet. Select a style that matches the other pieces in the entryway, including the console table, for a cohesive, beautiful look.
