Adding a Black Sofa Table to Your Décor

As you decide which piece of furniture will best suit your home’s living space, you may be thinking you want something other than a regular coffee table. A taller version of a coffee table, a black sofa table, is becoming increasingly popular, thanks in large part to the greater square footage in today’s homes. Home décor has changed in recent years. No longer are sofas relegated to one wall to spend their lives.  Sofas are now being placed in the middle of a room rather than against the wall, which allows for the addition of a black sofa table behind them.

While the idea seems new in today’s home décor, sofa tables themselves are by no means new. They originated in the late 18th Century, when low back sofas first came into style. A black sofa table would be placed behind the sofa so anyone sitting on the sofa has a place to set a book or cup of tea as they lounged.

The look of a black sofa table can differ immensely by the environment it is placed in.  In Victorian furniture settings, they may be ornate pieces with beautifully tooled legs and ornate surfaces. Other black sofa table finishes could include be those adorned with fossil stone tiled tops, or hand turned carvings. You can even find a black sofa table suitable for modern décor, complete with metallic legs.

When using a black sofa table in your décor you have a lot of flexibility. That is because black is a neutral tone. Much like clothing in a wardrobe, a black sofa table can be integrated with existing furnishings with ease. With a black sofa table, all you need to worry about is matching the style of furniture. In other words, a contemporary black sofa table should be used with other modern style furnishings. It will look out of place in a room designed in Americana for example.  Likewise, if you have a Victorian setting, you would not want the sharp lines of a modern black sofa table in the room; it would clash with the atmosphere you are trying to create. Instead, you would look for a black sofa table with softer, curved lines and more lavish embellishments, such as hand-carved detailing.

One thing many people forget when purchasing a black sofa table is to measure where it is going to go. It is not just knowing the length of the sofa that is important in this case, but also making sure to know the height of your sofa as well. Since this table will need to be placed seamlessly behind your sofa, this measurement is very important.  Think of it as an extension of your sofa, backwards. You need to make sure it is the same height as the sofa. A few inches either way can make a big difference. If the table is too tall, it will jut out above the back of your sofa. If it is too short, it will disappear behind a higher backed sofa piece and be lost to your guests, or inconvenient to use from a seated position.
